Pachagazine: Can you share a bit about your background and what initially sparked your interest in becoming a rapper?
Groovy: My journey into rap started at home, where my older sister introduced me to legends like Tupac, Biggie, and E-Sir. Their words resonated with me deeply, but it was when I joined high school choir that things really kicked off. Meeting Michelle and Joy, who shared my love for hip-hop, led us to form a rap group. From there, performing at talent shows and school assemblies solidified my passion for this art form. It became clear to me early on that I was destined for this path.
Pachagazine: How would you describe your unique style or sound as a rapper?
Groovy: I would describe my style as “edgy trap.” It’s a fusion of Sheng and English, allowing me to push boundaries with my lyrics while embracing both my aggressive and calm sides, reflecting my Gemini nature. I aim to create music that not only captivates but also challenges societal norms, especially when it comes to sexuality and emotion.
Pachagazine: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your music career so far, and how did you overcome it?
Groovy: The biggest challenge I’ve faced in my music career has been overcoming self-doubt. As my own worst critic, I tend to overthink and second-guess my abilities. However, I’m actively working on building my confidence and trusting in my talent more each day.
Pachagazine: Who are some of your musical influences, and how have they inspired your own work?
Groovy: My musical influences range from Nicki Minaj and Kanye West to A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar. Nicki, in particular, has been instrumental in shaping my cadence, flow, and lyricism. Her fearlessness and creativity inspire me to constantly push the boundaries of my own artistry.
Pachagazine: Can you walk us through your typical creative process when writing and producing a new track?
Groovy: When I approach a new track, I immerse myself in the music, allowing it to guide my thoughts and emotions. I start by vibbing to the beat, often humming along until a word or phrase sparks my creativity. From there, I build upon that initial inspiration, letting the words flow naturally.
Pachagazine: What themes or messages do you aim to convey through your music, and why are they important to you?
Groovy: Through my music, I aim to empower women to embrace their sexuality and individuality unapologetic ally. It’s crucial for me to convey messages of self-love and confidence, drawing from my own experiences of finding strength and empowerment through music during times of doubt and insecurity.
Pachagazine: Could you tell us about any memorable moments or experiences you’ve had while performing live or recording in the studio?
Groovy: One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had was performing at Nyege Nyege in 2023. The energy from the crowd and the overwhelming support I received reaffirmed my passion for performing live. It’s moments like these that remind me why I chose this path and fuel my drive to keep creating.
Pachagazine: What do you hope listeners take away from your music?
Groovy: I want listeners to recognize me as a force to be reckoned with, to appreciate the craftsmanship in my sound, and ultimately, to feel empowered and uplifted by my music. My goal is to create feel-good music that resonates with people on a deeper level.
Pachagazine: Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re particularly excited about that you can share with us?
Groovy: I’m currently working on my next tape, which will feature different collaborations and explore new musical vibes. I’m excited to share this project with my fans and introduce them to a fresh sound that reflects my growth as an artist.
Pachagazine: What advice would you give to aspiring rappers or musicians who are just starting out in the industry?
Groovy: To aspiring rappers and musicians just starting out, my advice would be to tune out the noise and focus on honing your craft. Dedicate every hour to your passion, because practice truly does make perfect.
Pachagazine: How do you think the rap scene has evolved over the years, and where do you see it heading in the future?
Groovy: The rap scene has evolved tremendously over the years, becoming more accommodating and diverse. New artists are redefining hip-hop in innovative ways while still paying homage to its origins. I believe the future of hip-hop is bright, with endless possibilities for creativity and expression.
Pachagazine: Can you share any insights into your personal life or experiences that have influenced your music in significant ways?
Groovy: Leaving home to pursue my dreams as an artist was a defining moment in my life. Despite facing skepticism from my family, music became my refuge and salvation. The hardships I endured during that time have deeply influenced my music, shaping it into a reflection of my journey and growth.
Pachagazine: What role do you think social media and online platforms play in the success of artists today, and how do you navigate that landscape?
Groovy: Social media plays a pivotal role in the success of artists today, offering a platform for self-promotion and connecting with fans. However, it also presents challenges, with the risk of artistic theft and online negativity. Navigating this landscape requires striking a balance between engagement and self-care.
Pachagazine: How do you stay creatively inspired and motivated, especially during times of uncertainty or challenges?
Groovy: To stay creatively inspired and motivated, I listen to a diverse range of music, drawing inspiration from different genres and styles. This helps me to continually evolve as an artist and stay true to my unique vision.
