On Thursday, President William Ruto made a significant move by appointing Equity CEO James Mwangi as the Chancellor of Kenya’s first virtual public university, which is based at Konza Technopolis. Accompanying this appointment was the selection of Professor Ezra Maritim as the council chair.
During the announcement, President Ruto expressed utmost confidence in Mwangi’s leadership, emphasizing that he had specifically requested him for the role. He firmly believes that with Mwangi’s stewardship, the university will be in safe hands.
The charter for the university was officially awarded during a ceremony held at Konza Technopolis City in Machakos County. The event saw the presence of several esteemed leaders, including Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Members of Parliament, Governors, and other dignitaries.
President Ruto cited Section 24 (1b) of the University Act as the legal basis for awarding the charter to the varsity. He stated that he was fully satisfied that this decision would greatly benefit the advancement of university education in Kenya.
On August 3, 2023, President William Samoei Ruto, the President of Kenya and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, officially granted the charter to the Open University of Kenya, extending his well-wishes for the institution’s success.
Operating under the theme ‘The Innovative University for Inclusive Prosperity,’ the university is set to embark on its journey of providing accessible and progressive education opportunities to the people of Kenya.
